Making your template is basically easy. The main thing is to make sure once completed it completely covers the inside area of the piano, a little extra is better to allow for shrinkage of the wool over time. Follow the steps in each picture, and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call.
1. You will need craft paper as wide and long as your piano lid. If needed tape two pieces together to make the width, using masking tape securely on both sides.
2. You will use the closed grand piano lid as the template. This is slightly larger than
the inside perimeter of the harp and rim, but works nicely because of the way
the cover will lay across the harp and a slight amount of shrinkage that not only occurs over time , but also during the manufacturing process. Mark the outer edge
of the lid on the paper, remove from piano and cut to match the lid.
3. Open the lid and remove the music desk. Lay the paper template inside across the harp and center it around the rim and tail so that there is about the same amount of extra paper all the way around the side and tail of the rim. Secure it in place with a few pieces of tape. Once centered mark the front stretcher and all of the plate struts on the pattern. Do not worry about the extra paper on the front of the
template use it to label your make model and serial number if available. Also mark
the location of any plate bolts that stick up above the plate. Last check the fit at each side under the music desk area and lid prop where the cover will need to clear the harp and rim. If there is no place for the extra material to slide between them cut off the excess. Some modern pianos will need adjustments there, and a few older antique pianos might as well .
4. It's done. Be sure to mark the template make and model. See shipping notes
on side bar to left.
